/  Photography   /  Questions People Ask Me Before Booking a Portrait Photoshoot (Including the Weird Ones)

If you’re currently Googling things like portrait photographer near me, professional photo shoot, creative portrait session, branding photography, editorial portraits, or even just “I need nice photos but I hate having my photo taken”… welcome. You are exactly my people.

One thing I’ve learned as a photographer is that people have a LOT of questions before booking a photo shoot. Some are practical. Some are emotional. Some are mildly unhinged. And honestly? I prefer that. I really do.

I have found the best photo sessions happen when people feel comfortable enough to ask the weird stuff too.

So here’s a very very honest FAQ from a portrait photographer who has heard almost everything.

“I’m awkward in photos. Can you still make me look good?”

Yes. And before you panic, almost everyone says this. Every single week somebody arrives convinced they’re “bad at photos” as though being photogenic is some kind of rare blood type.

It isn’t.

Most people simply haven’t been photographed properly before. There’s a huge difference between: a random iPhone picture your mate took in Wetherspoons
and a professionally directed portrait session where somebody is actively helping you pose, relax, move, and not look like a startled Victorian ghost.

  • You do not need modelling experience.
  • You do not need confidence
  • You do not need to know what to do with your hands.

That’s literally my job.

“What actually IS a portrait photoshoot?”

Good question, because people search for this in about 400 different ways.

A portrait photoshoot can mean:

  1. personal portraits
  2. creative portraits
  3. headshots
  4. business branding photos
  5. editorial photography
  6. content creation sessions
  7. couples portraits
  8. alternative fashion portraits
  9. dramatic studio photography
  10. lifestyle photo shoots
  11. personal branding photography
  12. and more.

Basically: if the focus is you, your personality, your business, your vibe, or your face looking significantly better than your passport photo… it falls under portrait photography.

“What do I wear to a photo shoot?”

The short answer: Wear something that feels like you.

The longer answer: Please do not panic buy an entirely new personality online the night before.

The best portraits happen when you actually feel comfortable.

That said:

  • avoid giant logos unless that’s your style
  • textures photograph beautifully
  • layers work well
  • black is timeless
  • neutral tones are safe
  • dramatic outfits are VERY welcome in my studio.

And yes, I will absolutely help you plan outfits beforehand.

“Can you Photoshop me?”

Depends what you mean.

Will I remove temporary things?

  • spots
  • bruises
  • random scratches
  • things you specifically ask about

Absolutely.

Will I turn you into an entirely different species with AI skin smoothing so aggressive you look vacuum-sealed?

No. I want you to look like yourself on your best day. Im not into making you like a waxwork version of yourself.

“Do you help with posing?”

Constantly.

Nobody naturally knows how to pose unless they are:

a full-time model
chronically online
possessed by the spirit of Vogue magazine

I direct throughout the session the entire time. You will not be abandoned in front of a camera while I yell: “Just act natural! Because nobody knows what that means.

“Can I bring emotional support friends?”

Honestly, yes.

Sometimes bringing a friend helps massively with nerves. Sometimes they hype you up. Sometimes they help carry bags. Sometimes they become unpaid lighting assistants against their will.

The only exception is if they’re going to spend the entire session saying:
“Can you make them thinner?” from behind the camera every 12 seconds.

Then we may need a small exorcism.

“Do you photograph people who aren’t models?”

Most of my clients are not models.

They’re:

  • business owners
  • musicians
  • actors
  • creatives
  • people celebrating milestones
  • people rebuilding confidence
  • people wanting photos that actually feel like them
  • people updating dating profiles after finally leaving that person who thought emotional availability was a government conspiracy.

Portrait photography is for normal humans too.

“Can I book a photoshoot just because?”

PLEASE DO.

You do not need:

an engagement
a birthday
a business launch
a modelling contract
permission from the council

Sometimes people just want cool photographs of themselves. And honestly? More people should.

“Will you tell me what to do with my face?”

Yes. Because nobody knows what their face is doing.

Half of portrait photography is me saying:

“drop your shoulders”
“stop clenching your jaw”
“you’re doing the murder stare again”
“perfect”
“WAIT THAT LOOKED INCREDIBLE”

Professional photography is basically controlled chaos with good lighting.

“Can you make me look taller?”

Camera angles are magical. So yes. Within reason. I cannot legally turn you into a 6’4 Viking warrior overnight, but photography does involve a lot of visual trickery. Short kings and pocket-sized queens: you are safe here.

“Do I need professional hair and makeup?”

Not necessarily.

Some clients love the full glam experience. Some turn up in Docs and eyeliner they did in the car. Both are valid.

Professional makeup can help photography translate beautifully on camera, especially in studio lighting, but it is not mandatory to get strong portraits.

“What’s the weirdest thing someone has asked you before a photo shoot?”fashion. knitwear, khandie photography, photographer, northampton,

You asked for bizarre questions, so here we go. Real energy. Real chaos.

I’ve been asked:

  1. if I can make someone’s ex jealous
  2. whether fake blood is allowed (yes)
  3. if pigeons can be included in a portrait concept (also yes)
  4. whether I can Photoshop abs onto somebody “but subtly”
  5. if smoke machines are dangerous to ghosts
  6. whether fishnets count as business wear
  7. if bringing a sword is “too much”

For the record: the sword was absolutely not too much.

“How far in advance should I book a portrait photographer?”

Honestly? Earlier than most people think.

Especially if you want:

weekends
seasonal shoots
studio sessions
branding shoots before launches
content for marketing campaigns
specific dates

The best time to enquire is before you desperately need the images. Not three days before your website launch while crying into Canva.

“What if I hate every photo of myself?”

This is more common than you think.

A lot of people are incredibly hard on themselves because they’re used to:

selfies
bad angles
harsh phone cameras
seeing themselves only in motion
social media comparison

Professional portrait photography changes that experience completely. And genuinely? One of my favourite parts of this job is watching people realise:
“Oh. That’s actually me.”
