/  Photography   /  Capturing the Essence of Oslo: My Journey to Winning 3rd Place in the Society of International Travel and Tourism Photographer Street Photography Competition

Imagine strolling down the charming streets of Oslo, Norway, capturing the vibrant essence of a city with your camera. The moment when your lens captures a slice of life, a story untold, or a fleeting emotion that lingers in the hearts of the people you’ve never met. For me, this dream became a reality when I recently clinched the 3rd place in the Society of International Travel and Tourism Photographer’s Street Photography Competition. Join me on this journey as I share the story behind the winning image that encapsulated the essence of Oslo.

The Competition

The Society of International Travel and Tourism Photographer (SITTP) is known for celebrating exceptional travel and tourism photography from around the world. Their annual Street Photography Competition provides a platform for photographers to showcase the unique beauty, culture, and stories of cities across the globe. With entries pouring in from talented photographers worldwide, I felt both excitement and nervousness as I submitted my photograph.

Oslo’s Charm

Oslo, the capital of Norway, is a city that resonates with beauty, culture, and a blend of modernity and tradition. Known for its picturesque streets, the city is a goldmine for street photographers. I wanted to capture the genuine spirit of Oslo and tell a story that would resonate with people who had never experienced the city themselves. You can watch my recent YouTube about it here:

The Winning Photograph

The winning photograph was taken during my visit to Oslo this summer. As I walked through the busy Oslo central station I noticed a woman in a vibrant yellow dress. She stood out amongst the grey marble and stone.

The image showcases a young woman walking out of frame in a yellow dress. Strong graphic lines and shadows frame her. I love how the only real colour is her.

The Journey Behind the Lens

The process of capturing this winning image involved a deep connection with the city. I spent days exploring Oslo’s neighborhoods, talking to locals and friends. I discovered that the beauty of street photography lies in its ability to capture the fleeting moments of everyday life that often go unnoticed. It’s about connecting with the people and places, being present in the moment, and waiting for that split second when a story unfolds.

Winning 3rd Place

Receiving the news that I had won 3rd place in the SITTP Street Photography Competition was a moment of overwhelming joy and pride. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling through photography and a reminder that even the smallest moments can speak volumes. The recognition from the competition and the opportunity to share my vision of Oslo with a global audience has been an incredible honor.

My journey to winning 3rd place at the Society of International Travel and Tourism Photographer Street Photography Competition was a testament to the power of photography in capturing the essence of a place and its people. Oslo’s beauty and charm provided the perfect canvas for me to create a moment frozen in time, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share it with the world. Street photography is a celebration of the everyday, and my hope is that this photograph inspires others to explore the world with open eyes, capturing the stories that surround us every day.
