One of the things I love most about being a professional photographer is that no two assignments are ever the same.
One week I might be photographing a wedding in Northamptonshire. The next, I’m covering a corporate event, creating brand imagery for a local business, or documenting a live performance. Recently, that variety led me to one of the UK’s most iconic comedy venues: The Comedy Store in London.
I was commissioned to photograph A Celebration of Junior Simpson, an event that brought together some of the biggest names in British comedy to celebrate Junior’s incredible contribution to the industry.
For me, this assignment carried a personal significance.
I’ve known Junior’s wife, Emma Ruth—known to many as Miss Em—for almost two decades. We first crossed paths on the cabaret circuit many years ago, long before photography became my full-time career. Like many creative industries, the entertainment world is surprisingly small, and over the years our paths have continued to cross.
Being trusted to document such an important occasion wasn’t something I took lightly.
Behind the Scenes at a Special Event
The event itself was filled with warmth, humour, and genuine affection for Junior. As an event photographer, these are often the moments that matter most—not just the headline names on stage, but the interactions happening between people, backstage conversations, laughter between old friends, and those fleeting moments that tell the real story of the day.
Having backstage access allowed me to capture a side of the event that most attendees never get to see.
As photographers, we’re often invited into spaces that require a huge amount of trust. Whether it’s behind the scenes at a live entertainment event, inside a wedding morning preparation room, or documenting a business launch, our role is to observe, anticipate, and preserve moments without disrupting them.
It’s a responsibility I never take for granted.
Why Event Photography Matters
Many people think event photography is simply taking pictures of what’s happening. In reality, great event photography is about storytelling.
It’s about documenting atmosphere, relationships, reactions, and moments that help people remember not just what happened, but how it felt.
Events like this are a reminder that photography has the power to preserve history, celebrate achievements, and document communities coming together.
Years from now, these images will become part of the story of a remarkable career and a remarkable day.

Whether I’m photographing a local business event in Northampton or documenting a major entertainment event in London, the goal remains the same: creating authentic, professional images that tell the story of the occasion.
Thank You
A huge thank you to Junior Simpson, Emma Ruth, The Comedy Store, and everyone involved in organising such a special event.
It was a privilege to be trusted with documenting the day, and a reminder of why I love what I do.
