22 Portraits, One Day: What I Learned Running a Pay-What-You-Can Photography Event in Northampton
There are days you remember forever and for me, this was one of them.
I recently ran a Pay What You Can portrait day here in Northampton at my studio, and honestly? It turned out to be one of the most powerful experiences I’ve had behind the lens in a long time.
In just one day, I photographed 22 incredible individuals, couples, and families. Some had never stepped in front of a professional camera before. Others hadn’t had a portrait since their school days. And all of them reminded me exactly why I do what I do.
Why I Ran a Pay-What-You-Can Day
Photography shouldn’t only be for those with disposable income. Everyone deserves to feel seen, celebrated, and proud of how they look without worrying about the price tag.
I wanted to remove the financial barrier, just for a day, and open the door to those who might not usually get a chance to have professional photos taken.
So I offered:
- A 15-minute portrait session
- 1 professionally edited image
- Same-day delivery
- And payment? Whatever they could afford.
No judgment. No pressure. Just connection and creativity.
What Can You Really Achieve in 15 Minutes?
Honestly? A lot more than you’d think.
Here’s what 15 minutes can give you:
- A natural, flattering portrait that actually looks like you
- Confidence you didn’t know you had
- A lasting memory captured forever
And because I kept the workflow simple, clients received their edited images that same day. No long waits. Just fast, beautiful results.
Who Came Through the Doors?
Everyone. Literally.
- A young mum with her baby, wanting to mark her first year of motherhood
- A local brand new small business owner needing a headshot that actually looked like her
- A woman who hadn’t had a photo of herself she liked since school
- A couple celebrating their anniversary with a spontaneous shoot
- And even a group of friends who booked a slot “just for the laughs”
Every story mattered. Every person brought something special. Every image felt like a tiny rebellion against perfectionism, awkward school photos, and the belief that photography isn’t “for people like us.”
Here’s Just a Glimpse
What This Day Taught Me (And Why It Matters)
This wasn’t about charity. It was about access. Dignity. Choice. Visibility.
It reminded me that portrait photography is more than aesthetics: it’s a record of identity.
It also proved just how much can be achieved when:
- The energy is relaxed
- The space is welcoming
- The photographer (hey, that’s me!) knows how to get results, fast
This was a test of my skill, my process, and my stamina.
22 shoots. One day. All delivered that evening.
And yes, I slept very well that night.
